Wrestle Me?
You're up the CREEK without a paddle!
Just ONE of the phrases you have to choose from when we vote on WHAT to put on the back of our shirts this year!
Do you have a suggestion? Put it on paper and bring it in. We will choose one, by majority vote, at the parent meeting!
OLD wrestling shoes that are too small?
Bring them in maybe someone else can use them!!! Nothing wrong with giving!
Are you a first year wrestler and want to know what to expect?
Read on!
SHOES: MUST NOT be the same shoes you wear outside! If you are going to wait on purchasing wrestling shoes, please provide your child with a CLEAN change of shoes for practice. Because........
With the threat of MRSA…..We are taking every step possible to keep the children protected from this infection. For more information on MRSA check the website below! It's just ONE of the MANY websites containing information on this infection.
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/mrsa/DS00735
After each and every practice, or tournament it is VERY important to wash your entire body with soap. This is to prevent the spread of ring worm, MRSA, and any other type of skin infection. Although the mats are cleaned each day people can still carry the the infection.
Purchasing shoes?
Wrestling shoes can be purchased at MCSports in Grand Blanc. The shoes always seem to be priced between $19.99 and $29.99 for the younger guys. Sports Authority on Miller road also carries them, although their selection may be skimpy if they have not received their wrestling products for the season. Dunhams, on Corunna Rd. also carries wrestling shoes (usually at the higher end of the price list), and they USUALLY have singlets...but keep in mind, the club with supply you with a DRAGONS singlet for use throughout the season. They will be given out at an upcoming practice....there will be a deposit on the singlets.
Absolutely no metal at practice. Metal pertains to zippers, buttons, earrings, anything that could cause injury if someone accidentally ran their face across it. Let's keep our children’s faces beautiful!
Practice attire: Shorts, t shirt, sweats. It does get hot in the wrestling room..keep that in mind!
What to expect at practice!!
Novice practice will run from 6-7 p.m. each and every Tuesday and Thursday, with our EXTREME practice every Wednesday.
Practices start with warm ups...stretching to prevent injuries, then some cardio (jumping jacks, crunches, pushups and UP AND CHOPPIN!!!!) which will ultimately give the kids the endurance they will need during a match.
Coach Wade will also be going over wrestling technique. These are moves you need to know to get anywhere during a match. The kids will be able to go through the moves and practice on each other. Each week SHOULD bring a new "move" and exercise of previous learned technique. Coach Wade will ALWAYS take the time out to go over a move for your child.
At other points of practice there will be what is called Round Robin. This is just live wrestling. The kids will switch on and off partners (Of their own weight as much as possible) for however many minute intervals Coach Wade chooses. This is hard work, non stop wrestling!
And of course there is ALWAYS time for games. Coach Wade, when the practice has been good, will sometimes end practice a little early and everyone gets to play a game…..even MOMS AND DADS!
Water breaks!!!!
To make sure the kids are not running in and out of the wrestling room with their CLEAN shoes on…..into the hall where it has not been disinfected, and back onto the mats, we are asking for the kids to bring water bottles IF you can, for water break. If not, we will have to try to figure out a cleaner way for everyone to run to the fountain. And this way your child will not have to wait in line just to get a drink.
Mats will be and are ALWAYS disinfected BEFORE each and every practice!
For open wrestlers!!! You know what's coming! You're going to WORK!
Wed. Extreme practices are NOT exclusive. They are open to anyone wanting to improve and work hard to get there. This is a work HARD practice. No mercy! They will run from 6-8 p.m.
Also for information about what is novice and what is open in MMWA...go to the links page and visit the MMWA website, they have that information available for you!
I know this is A LOT to read..but we want to make sure everyone gets as much info as possible!
SCYW will also be participating in MYWay this year more actively...Dave Mesack is our MYWay represenative..any questions pertaining to that issue should be directed to him. His contact information is available on the contact page.
ALSO, although you want the kids to have fun, this is NOT social hour. In previous years children would run out of the wrestling room to play in the hall..leaving their partner alone with no one to work with, this is not fair for the kids who really do want to learn wrestling. If your child decides that playing in the hall is more important than his teammate, who wishes to wrestle...maybe wrestling is not for him/her.
We also have had incidents where younger siblings have been in the room and they have caught a heel in the face because they were playing on or by the mats, or fell and hurt themselves because they were climbing somewhere they shouldn't be!
If this were football practice would you allow your little child on the field? We would hope not! Please do not allow them to play on or by the mats where the kids are practicing.
We understand that not everyone has the luxury of leaving the younger siblings home with someone but please keep them out in the hall if they cannot sit quietly in the room. Sometimes when it is instruction time (EXPLAINING) it is hard for some to hear because of the background noise coming from parents and other children chatting..please keep this in mind when attending practice. We ask that casual conversation take place in the hall.
Coach Wade has his own rule for practice and he will go over them with you!
We will also need coaches, there will be a weekly sign up for this for each tournament. Since coach Wade cannot be at every tournament, and he has two of his very own wrestlers, we do ask for volunteer coaches at tournaments. Coach Wade will try to make sure he has every tournament covered with coaches but when he can't we need you parents to be a part of the club!
We have not decided if we will have a "class" to teach scoring and such just for the people who choose to coach, or just information..we'll get more information on that ASAP!
We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday! We are excited to see all the new faces..and of course we LOVE our open guys/gals! Here's to an exciting and successful season!
ANY QUESTIONS? CHECK OUT THE FORUM!
Coach Wade and other "veteran" wrestling parents check the forum periodically and could probably answer ANY questions you have..so USE IT..it's there for you!
